The Ashtanga Yoga system is a living lineage that dates back nearly five thousand years in a unbroken line of teachers, sages and gurus that has reached millions of practitioners through the inspirational life of Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois. It is now continued and honored by his son Manju Pattabhi Jois, his daughter Saraswati, his grandson R. Sharath Jois and every Ashtanga teacher and practitioner today.  Guruji as Pattabhi Jois was affectionally called by his students, continued the lineage of these teachings in Mysore, India and all around the world and it is through his lifelong dedication that we have the gift of Ashtanga yoga today. What makes the Ashtanga system different from most other systemsof practicing yoga is your breath. Postures are linked together through flowing movement (vinyasa). Vinyasa means breath synchronized with movement. In Ashtanga Yoga the movement is always synchronized with the breath and there is never a separation between the two actions. When the synchronization of movement and breathing is an integral part of the yoga practice an internal, purifying heat is generated in the body. Unwanted toxins are released and disposed of, vital hormones and minerals flow into the bloodstream and the nervous system is purified. The result is a light and strong body.

Ashtanga yoga is one of the six philosophical systems, called darshans, of the Vedic culture. It attempts to understand the essence of the mind. Yoga is by far the deepest science of the human mind as well as the most effective practical discipline to teach us understand our mind and learn to control it - chitta vritti nirodha - which, in fact, leads to liberation from the attachments to the material world. 

Patanjali called this discipline ashta-anga, meaning having 8 (ashau) limbs, aspects or steps to be undertaken progressively before any transcendence of the mind could bepossible. The first 4 of these angas are known as hatha yoga - the yoga of effort, which purifes and balances the body, mind and senses as preparation for the higher stages of yoga.  

Ashtanga yoga includes all 8 limbs. Today many teach only the third limb - asana and maybe a little of the fourth limb - pranayama, but Ashtanga yoga cannot stop here. In fact, asana and pranayama are just the starting point. 

Pattabji Jois, the founder of the Ashtanga yoga school, has always insisted that Patanjali's ashta-anga and the contemporary ashtanga vinyasa system are one and the same thing. He said that practicing only asana without following the iternal goal of yoga is dangerous for the practitioner because it accumulates the"six poisons" around the heart - desire, anger, self-deception, attachments, envy and greed.

tapaha swadhyaya ishwarapranidhanani kriya yogaha.


The first sutra of the Sadhana pada from the Patanjali's "Yoga Sutras" describes the magic of Ashtanga yoga very well.  Tapas, meaning "to burn", is the fire needed to practice diligently and to progress. This is the physical level of transformation brought along by the magical elixir of techniques and practices in Ashtanga yoga. We need tapas for daily practice of asana, fueled by the breath.   

But practice is life itself. So, on and off the mat, we wouldn't be able to succeed without swadhyaya - the reflexion and self-analysis that help us get in touch and stay connected to the very core of our being. Swadhyaya is the mental ingredient of the magical potion.

Ishvara-prandihana is the spiritual part. Literally meaning "devotion to God", Ihvara-pranidhana has nothing to do with any specific deity or religion as such. This is simply the creative potential in each of us that connects us all with everything and everyone into one whole. Ishvara-pranidhana opens the door to what some call "magic", others - wonder, others still - God's Grace. For me personally, it is a logical and natural process since we are not given anything, nor can anything be taken from us. Whatever has to happen will happen when it is the right time for it. Ishvara-pranidhana means to drop all expectations and ego and just BE. HERE. NOW.



"Parampara" literally means "unbroken succession" or lineage and the word has been used for the continuous direct transfer of knowledge in time fron guru (the teacher) to shishya (the student). In order for the teaching to be compete and effective, it has to come through guru-parampara. The connection between teacher and student exists since ancient times in India and has been the foundation of this rich spiritual ancestry we call yoga. For Ashtanga yoga, the tradition and lineage starts with Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya and his student Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. 

Many of Pattabhi Jois students, now acknowledged as senior teachers, teach even today and in their turn produce e new generation of teachers. Manju Jois continues spreading the tradition outside of India. Nancy Gilgoff, David Swenson, John Scott, Tim Miller, Lino Miele, Richard Freeman, David Guarrigues are just some of those first to have studied directly with Guruji for years. They have also taught some of the younger generation of today's teachers like David Robson, Kino MacGregor or yours truly Irina Bachvarova. We, in our turn, teach to the next would-be teachers...and so the tradition is kept alive. 

If you want to learn Ashtanga yoga and have a transformative practice, it is of high importance to study with a teacher from the lineage that revers the tradition and understands the technique in his/her core.
